Baby Talk: Calming and Understanding Your Baby with Baby Language

As all new parents would say, the first few days, weeks, or months with your baby could be a bittersweet mix of pure bliss and insanity. Holding your baby for the first time, bringing him home, and sharing his "firsts" is such a precious moment for parents. Then there's the sleepless nights, endless crying, and (if you're a breastfeeding mom like me) the on-demand feeding.

Having a crying baby and not knowing what to do or how to soothe him can be both frustrating and heart-breaking, especially for first-time parents. Luckily, our son doesn't cry much and when he does it would be just a little "eh" and not a loud wail. A few days ago though, we noticed the little man fussing and crying a lot. Daddy and I were both desperate to find a way to soothe our little one so I did some research. (We later on found out the crying was due to the discomfort pooping was causing him. The culprit? Gastrointestinal Colic- something that is very common to newborns).

So we studied our baby's actions and behavior and compared it to what we learned with the research. Here's our secret to keeping our little man calm and happy: The Baby Language.

Did you know that there's a "Baby Language"? It's not that "gaga googoo" sounds they make. This is very useful especially if you're a new parent and has an infant. There are 5 sounds/words babies use to communicate:

"NEH" sound- when your baby starts to cry and goes like "nehhh" or "neeeeeh" it means he's hungry.
"HEH" sound- when your baby starts to cry and goes like "eheh" or "heh/heh heh" it's a sign of discomfort. Time to change his diaper, swaddle him, unswaddle him, or switch him to a more comfortable position.
"AH" or "OH/OWH" sound- baby goes like "aaah/uwaaaah/ohh/ow" it means he's sleepy.
"EGH/EEIGH/EAIR" sound- similar to "eh" sound but with more effort and force. It means he's pooping or has gas. He would usually pull his legs back when he does this sound.
"EH" sound- baby goes like "eh/eh eh" it means he wants to burp or be burped.

And of course, the most important things that baby need are your undivided attention and unconditional love. Hold your baby close to you, bond with him, snuggle with him, sing and talk to him, and comfort him whenever he feels scared or uncomfortable. This stage in your child's life happens only once, savor every moment of it!

So there you go, daddy and I's secret to keeping our little man happy and have better and longer sleeping hours.
